The sediment I&#039;m remembering now, from the melting snow in Cambridge, was all the dust and soot on top of each snowfall, that during the thaw, would melt down onto the next layer, until the last crust of snow was just black with it until it all melted into the mud underneath.  In Rochester it may not be so urban (or polluted), so your melting snow may actually stay relatively white.</description>
