Fish and Oil

I’ve had some pretty interesting encounters with businesses this past month. I went in to PetSmart to get a new goldfish. Thought it might be a fun early Valentine’s gift. I looked in the tank and picked out the fish I wanted and then got a worker and told her which fish I wanted. She asked me the size of my tank and how many fish I had. After telling her I had like an eight gallon tank and 4 fish she refused to sell me the little fish I wanted. She insisted on telling me that these fish can get really big- the size of 2 softballs (she showed me with her hands) and you really need a bigger tank. She continued to ask me about my tank and showed me other tanks I could buy to suit how many fish I had in the tank. I said, “What if I just want to get the fish anyhow, I think it will be fine.” Response, “I’m sorry, I can’t sell it to you.” Are you kidding me? I couldn’t believe it. I left feeling completely disappointed- I even knew which little fishy would be perfect for our little tank and couldn’t purchase it. (I went over to Petco the next day and bought me a little fantail goldfish- other than always hiding in our cave, he’s been doing just fine for the past 3 weeks.)

Then I went to get an oil change a few days ago at Walmart. Dropped the car off, then went shopping for an hour since they told me it would take 1-1.5 hrs. Came back and they told me that the plug was on too tight so they couldn’t change the oil. Hu? First thing, it would have been nice if they would have called me or paged me to let me know the car was done long ago- as much as I love wandering around the store with little Michael, it’s exhausting if you know what I mean. I asked what the cause of a tight plug was- answer- the last person who changed it screwed it on too tightly. Ummm. The guy asked me who changed it last. “You.” Oh…and he looked through my file and took the blame. Guess it was us he said. He told me to go to another automotive place to have them see if they could get the plug out- since the problem was that if the part breaks, Walmart doesn’t have what is needed to fix it and our car would have to be towed. Crazy. Moral is I guess- don’t take your car to Walmart for oil changes. After asking for some sort of compensation, the guy told me they could refund my last oil change. Didn’t seem very satisfactory to me so I told him I’d talk it over with my husband. Now, Walmart is willing to pay for the expenses we have to pay to cover the cost of the tight plug, should we incur a $400 bill (Dan talked with the manager and worked some of his magic). We are taking the car in again tomorrow- now that the shop ordered in the needed parts should they be needed when they try to unscrew the thing. Hope it works out for the best.

Nice. . . Way to go, Wal-Mart! And if it had been Matt about the fish, he would have said, “Why do you need to know?” I’m thinking that it’s not like a foster child or even a dog for that matter. It’s not like you have a “cruelty to fish” record. Talk about needing a background check to buy a goldfish. Sheesh.

    Hey there Care Bear-
I just found your blog. I didn’t realize ya’ll were so far away up in WI or ME or something. Hope all is well for you. Your little boy is so cute!

Oh my gosh, the same thing happened to us when we went to get an oil change at Walmart. They said we had to take it back to the last place because the plug or whatever was stripped. Now something that wasn’t our fault is going to end up costing a bazillion dollars. Does that pet place have the right to refuse the sale based on what they think is the best interest of the animal/fish? That was very interesting. Also, our whole family got hit with the stomach flu on January 27. Same day! We are just barely better and it’s March now! Crazy.

We had the same “your plug is stripped so we can’t help you conversation” with Wal-mart. Just go to Jiffy Lube.

WOW! On Wal-mart… that is just CRAZY!!! At least they are paying.
