“Southern Sand”

I have been living here in Rochester for over a month now and since the basement is being finished I haven’t taken the initiative to unpack the extra boxes in the garage and organize a few drawers and closets in which I have just stacked things to take care of later. I realize it is getting “later” and decided to put up a few wall decorations today before Dan’s group project of 5 came over tonight. Wow! What a difference a few wall hangings can make. It feels so much better to have a few of my pictures up and feel at home again. What have I been thinking? Life is so much more relaxing when you surround yourself with inspiring artwork, quotes, and family photos and aren’t just living in white walls. I am now determined to hang whatever else I can for now, to the point that I don’t have to re-hang things once we get things rearranged out of our living room and into our basement. But the bedrooms upstairs can certainly be decorated. Maybe I have just been inspired by all the interior design books I’ve been reading. After the painter asked me yesterday what color to paint the basement, I realized I had no idea. So I checked out a million books from the library and mulled over color theory, decor, and looked at all the pictures finding a few that I really liked. Went to the paint store this morning- Diamond Vogel’s (cool local store)- and decided to go with the color “Southern Sand” after mulling over it for like another 2 hours this morning with the different paint chips in hand. So now Southern Sand decorates our entire basement (painter finished around 8:30pm tonight). The color sure looks different up on the wall, but I am pleasantly surprised it turned out nice and think I will be happy with the color. I’ll let you know after the wall trim, doors, and carpet are in and we live in it for a few days. I just have to say that I think choosing a paint color has got to be one of the most difficult things for me. Anyone else ever realized how hard it is to picture the little paint chip up on your wall?

Yeah, it took us 3 tries to get the green right in our family room. We were just one value off, but it was too blue. I tried to get the Home Depot guy to retint it so I could save the 2 gallons, but didn’t like the results. In the end we bought a quart of another color, tried it on the walls, liked it, then went back for the whole 2 gallons. It’s amazing how things look different under artificial vs. natural light… AND how it changes up on a wall. In general, paint always looks lighter and brighter on a wall. So pick a deeper (down the paint chip) and darker (more shaded color – more black in it) color than you think you might like.

I do love the names of paint :) . We have “Mother Nature” and “Harvest Brown” downstairs… “Eminence”, “Rainsong”, and “Russian Blue” upstairs.
